These Black Monolith pieces done during the summer of 2016, were drawn with slightly wetted black chalks and wiped black wash on gessoed papers (14″ x 11″ / 35cm x 28cm). They were based on the recently done Postcards From Budapest Series 2016. The symmetry leading to the monolithic character of each single standing form was obtained by selectively extracting forms from the small card, then rotating the card or the paper and repeating the same interpretive drawing process. The torn holes emerged naturally as an additional component, adding, paradoxically, both a sense of depth (revealing the contrasting white behind the paper) and a flatness (accentuating the objective nature of the darkened page itself).
