WETTED PAGES

These single Wetted Pages (14″ x 11″ / 35cm x 28cm) were done on a slick, wetted table. This first exploration into the working with water soluble chalks on a highly water-saturated gessoed paper yielded some exciting surprises: the voluptuous responsiveness of the wet chalks, the surprising bubbling of the paper (visible in Wetted Pages – IV and VII) and the successful interplay of watercolor and chalk marks.

The network of fragmented marks and small forms, sometimes filling the entire picture-plane, other times confined within the interior space of a figural form, hum with a buzz of static. This turbulent aggregate of fragments and marks suggesting the guts of a standing figure have appeared in earlier figural works, such at the Big Lie Print Series, monotype woodcuts done in 2011 as part of the Big Series. This mark making has continued in the Wetted Scroll Series, which remarkably, is exactly the same size and format as the Big Lie Prints done back in 2011.
