A CHARMED LIFE
It was a charmed life
I said it many times
marveling in cheap gratitude
at the heights
climbing like a monkey
swinging like a child
tasting
joy.
All good things must end
who says so but it’s true
natural as a sunset
finite as Death
I grieve my innocence
admitting only now
what I knew then always to be
true.
The spell is broken
did I deserve it anyway
such luck of the draw
sacrifices made bright by desire
illusion of choice
ah there’s the thing
slippery sense of choice
blinding light is all it ever was.
